Leader of the Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party, DRP, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that he is determined to make the next presidential elections scheduled for next year a multiparty election and to ensure the election a free, fair and open one.
Speaking at a meeting held in Social Education Center yesterday night, DRP Leader said that he had assured all concerned at every opportunity he had, that every effort would be made to complete constitutional reform by 30 November 2007.
He noted not that in order to complete the constitutional reform by end November as scheduled, all DRP members of the Special Majlis must work in a united spirt. He further urged them not waste Majlis time by raising points of order unnecessarily.
DRP’s Leader Maumoon further noted that completion of constitutional reform is essential to hold the multiparty presidential elections next year. He also noted the importance of making the rules and regulations governing such elections need to be formulated on completion of the constitutional reform.
At the meeting, held to discuss ways of expediting the constitutional reform process, Maumoon called on all DRP members of the Special Majils for their cooperation to meet the deadline of November 30.
Maumoon also thanked Speaker Qasim Ibrahim of People’s Special Majlis for his efforts in speeding the constitutional reform process.
