Appointed Members delay constitutional reform - Ibra

01 November 2007
Report: Soodh

Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the People’s Special Majlis as well as MP for Male’ Ibrahim Ismail, Ibra, has said that the opposition to the constitutional reform shown by the President’s appointed Members are because those appointed Members are well aware that once the reform constitution is passed by the Majlis they would not even see the outside perimeter wall of the Majlis House.

Ibra made the statement to Velidhoo News when asked for his views on the constant fighting going on between the President’s Members and the opposition Members which are causing unnecessary delays to the constitutional reform process.

“The fighting is led by certain appointed Members: they constantly ridicule some Members and disrupt the working environment of the Majlis” Ibra told Velidhoo News.

President’s members delay tactics to the constitutional reform are mainly due to the fact that revised constitution has no provisions for appointed Members said Ibra.

Peaking on the issue Addu Member Husnu Al Suood told Velidhoo News that some Members are more interested in settling personal grievances rather than the work of the Majlis.

“Few Members have personal grievances to settle, others are mostly OK” said Suood.

Shahid Zak, Raa Atoll Member expressing his views said that the fighting is due to the newly gained freedom of speech.

Shahid Zaki asked”What will happen, when the tape covering their mouths were removed?”

Ibra offering a solution to the problem said”there is only one solution and that is people must come forward and express their displeasure; the people must remind these Members that they are there in the Majlis to conduct peoples work and not settle personal scores; the people should give them the message that if these Members not performing they should leave”. Ibra further added that the message should be given soon.

Members differ in their opnions as to who is obstructing constitutional reform process. President’s Members accuse opposition Members while opposition Members points their fingers at the Presidents Members.

During the Majlis session held on last Sunday a lot of time was wasted due to unnecessary fighting and by Members raising points of order.
