11 arrested in the bomb blast

Maldives Police Services has revealed that so far 11 people have been arrested in connection to the sultan park explosion of 29 September 2007.

Briefing the press on the developments, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Riyaz said that among the arrested are 9 Maldivian and two foreigners. He said this includes a youth of less than 18 years of age.

Officer Riyaz said “3 of these arrested were taken in to custody from a foreign country while attempting to flee from that country and one arrested at Male’ International Airport attempting to flee”. He did not provide the name of the country where the arrests were made.

FBI is now assisting Maldives Police in the investigation of the blast. In this regard 2 FBI officers stationed Sri Lanka arrived Male’ yesterday morning and are actively engaged in the investigations.

Officer Riyaz also said that Police investigation have identified the people involved in the blast; the interrogations has revealed the amount of involvement of those arrested and that those arrested have confessed. He also said that there are others who needs to be questioned in connection to the blast.

Home Minister Kamaaluhdheen has said that this device detonated at Sultan Park was made using 2 butane cylinders, a timer from a washing machine and mobile phone. Home Minister addressing the Citizens Majlis yesterday said that the person who called the mobile phone to activate the explosion has been identified. The sim card found in the mobile phone used to activate the detonation provided the information and police are searching for others who have contacted that sim. He further said that arrests are made according to certain principles and that others who are involved in the blast are being identified through the arrested people. Home Minister Kamaaluhdheen said at this juncture“instead of pointing the finger at a certain group the whole nation should stand united’.

Due to the blast of 29 September 12 tourists were injured. The most serious injuries were inflicted on a British couple, who came to spend their honeymoon in Male’. The injured British couple has been named as Christian Donelan, originally from Rotherham, and his wife Jennifer, whose maiden name is Green. They will soon be airlifted to UK for further treatment.
Mr and Mrs Donelan, aged 36 and 31, may need skin grafts after suffering burns in the blast, Dr. Shaugee said reports BBC.
Mr Donelan suffered 27 per cent burns to his lower body and limbs while his wife has 40 per cent burns to her face, hands and lower body, reports BBC.

BBC reports Dr. Mahmoud Shaugy Tourism Minister as saying that amoung those arrested include 2 Bangladeshi nationals but did not provide details.
