Mohamed Saleem President of the Gaafu Dhaalu branch of Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP, has denied that the Gaafu Dhaalu branch has submitted names and is engaged in campaign activities, for the election of the Committee for the Development of the Island scheduled for the 27 October 2007. MDP has called for a boycott of these elections.
Speaking to Velidhoo News Service, Saleem said that Committees for the Development of Islands are unconstitutional and that MDP and its Gafu Dhaalu branch have called on members not to participate in these elections.
“Everybody knows that this is an unconstitutional activity that is being carried out by the government; by electing committees that has no power, Maumoon government wants achieve personal goals” Said Saleem.
Saleem says that although the Gaafu Dhaalu branch has nothing to do with the elections, he has not stopped members of MDP from getting elected to committees for the development of the islands. He also noted that many young people frustrated with the present government wants to get elected. Saleem further says that the government plans to get all the money earned by the people and that there is no hope for the committees to get any constitutional authority in the near future.
“Mohamed Waheedundheen, Deen, was transferred to a completely different area because the government was frightened as he planning elect constitutionally empowered committees” Said Saleem.
The government has held seminars in 2005 and in 2006 on establishing Island Councils and Atoll Council. Further in order to know how these councils are formed in other parts of the world, a team from Atolls Ministry had visited India. In addition government has indicated that foreign would be received in the formulation of such councils.VELIDHOO COMMUNITY
