Maldives for the first time marks the Day of the Elderly with various colorful programs held across the country.
International Day for the Elderly is dedicated to honor, respect and care for the world's elderly. In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1st as the International Day for the Elderly, also known as the "International Day for Older Persons".
Aishath Mohamed Didi, Minister of Gender and Family addressed the nation on the occasion of the day. In her address she noted while each and every one of us hopes to be in that age group some day, the dignity, respect, safety and security of each and everyone reaching the age group must be assured.
This assurance can only achieved by giving proper care, respect and honor today’s elderly.
Various activities were held in atolls and Male’ to mark the day. The activities were organized by Family and Children Service Centers, island offices and the Committees working for advancement of women.
According to the United Nations, "one of every 10 persons is now 60 years or older. By the year 2050, one of five will be 60 years or older; by 2150, it will be one of three persons".
