It is important to ensure a safe environment for younger generations

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom says that it is important to work collaboratively to ensure that our habitat is a safe environment for younger generations. The President made this statement in his message on the occasion of World Habitat Day, which was marked yesterday. This is the first time that the Maldives marks World Habitat Day.

In his message, President Gayoom stated that problems associated with safety and security is a major challenge for urban and overcrowded nations. He highlighted the threat of natural disasters resulting from climate change to our islands, and stated that incidents created by humans can also threaten peace and safety in nations.

President further stated that the protection of our environment, especially in overcrowded urban areas such as Male’ and in the larger islands is the duty and responsibility of every citizen. In this regard, he highlighted the need for collaborative planning by the Government and citizens to achieve this objective.

Looking at the theme for this year’s World Habitat Day “A safe city is a just city” President stated that this theme denotes the importance of ensuring that every one of our inhabited islands are safe and that a safe habitat is one where love for justice and respect for rights are present.
