Maldives Police have revealed that 5 people arrested in connection to the Sultan Park Explosion have been released. They have been released as the investigation conducted so far has not indicated any involvement of these 5 people in the detonation of the bomb at Sultan Park. This information was released in a press release issued yesterday by the Police Services. The press release informs that of the 5 released, 1 is a Maldivian and other 4 are Foreigners.
Press Release further states that with the release of these 5 people, they have 11 more suspects under custody and that all of them are locals.
Press Release, in addition, reminded the public that withholding information regarding wanted suspects for questioning, under the Terrorism Law, is a serious crime and that they are still searching for the 2 suspects wanted for questioning under the sultan park explosion that occurred on 29 September 2007.
The suspects, wanted in the Sultan Park probe are Abdul Latheef Ibrahim Laamu Kalhaidoo and Ali Shameem Shaviyani Komandoo.
Maldives Police last Wednesday revealed details and CCTV footage of the two persons who carried out the explosion in Sultan Park on Saturday which injured 12 tourists. CCTV footage, taken 10 minutes before the explosion, showed Moosa Inas and Ahmed Naseer, entering and leaving the Sultan Park. They were seen leaving the park just minutes before the explosion. These details were given by Asst Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz. Riyal at a media briefing held at Police headquarters on last Wednesday. However he declined to give any information on the motives of the attack.
While a total of 12 tourists injured due to the explosion, 2 British nationals who sustained significant burns, 8 Chinese and 2 Japanese suffered minor burns and injury inflicted flying shrapnel. All were immediately taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and ADK Hospital for treatment. All expect the British couple were released the same day, the British couple who received more severe burns has been lifted to UK for further medical treatment on the 3 October 2007.
While strong condemnation from the government of Maldives was immediate, friendly neighboring countries such as Sri Lanka, India, and Singapore have also condemned the malicious act.
Maldives has always been a peace loving nation and has always condemned acts of terror where ever they may be perpetrated.
