Male’ member for the People’s Special Majlis Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) has said that nine chapters of the draft constitution have been sent to the special Majlis members. He said that members received the draft chapters two days ago.MP Nasheed said that the draft version they received includes four chapters already sent to the Majlis floor for debate, three chapters that the committee has called for amendments and two chapters which the committee has not make any decisions. He also said that drafting committee will need another four meetings to complete the rest of the chapters.
He said that receiving nine chapters at one time was very helpful. Nasheed said that it would also give members ample time to discuss and debate some of the contentious issues with public prior to the final debate in the Majlis.
Speaker of the Special Majlis has earlier sent a letter requesting to conduct two meetings of the drafting committee on a weekly basis in order to expedite the constitution amendment.
MP Nasheed said that he is hopeful that the constitution would be finalized before November 30. He said that if all members work in the same patriotic spirit, then there is no reason why it can’t be delivered.
He also said that it would be important to share the draft chapters of the constitution with public members and that he would relish an opportunity to discuss the draft chapters in a seminar or presentation sessions.
