Case related to vote rigging filed to Court

Report: Soodh

Ali Sawaad of Addu Atoll Feydhoo Dhunfinige has filed a case against Commissioner of Elections to the Civil Court yesterday. This was the second time he has filed the case to the Court.

His first attempt was unsuccessful since the Court rejected the case citing only People’s Majlis and the Commissioners Office could only file charges relating to vote irregularities.

However, Justice Ministry reported on Monday that public members can file cases to the Civil Court, which paved way for Sawaad to submit his case.

He said that he submitted the case since it was his right to seek justice in which he believes that officials have rigged vote during the public referendum held on August 18 to decide the system of government for Maldives.

Last week, Special Majlis member of Shaviyani Atoll Lubnaa Mohamed Zahir Hussain said that the Civil Court should accept the election related cases from public members following some complaints that the Court is rejecting cases filed by public members.

Speaking to N.Velidhoo Community, Media Co-ordinator of Justice Ministry Ibrahim Waheed Ali on Monday said that it was clearly stated in the article 24 that any member from the public could file a case to the Civil Court, provided that they deemed unlawful.
