Report: Soodh
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, former Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed and former Justice Minister Mohamed Jameel Ahmed who have resigned from their respective cabinet portfolios last month have denied the news that they held secret talks with senior members of Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP.
Speaking to Miadhu, Dr. Shaheed said that he went to Sri Lanka to make UK visa arrangements for his son. However, he did admit coincidentally meeting with Dr. Mohamed Munawwar, President of MDP at airport.
He denied meeting any senior MDP officials in Sri Lanka and said that all these were simply gossips being spread by people.
Jameel said that they all stayed in the same hotel in Sri Lanka, but denied having any secret talks with MDP members. He said that those stories are simply baseless. He also said that never in the past had they discussed about joining MDP and it remains the same.
Dr. Munawwar also confirmed not talking to them. He said that he has no idea where those stories are coming from. He also said that there was no meeting with them in Sri Lanka.
Both Dr. Saeed and Jameel resigned from the posts citing that their efforts on the reform agenda is not supported by the government. Dr. Shaheed resigned later in August immediately after the results of the public referendum to decide the system of government in the Maldives on 18 August.
Though they have resigned from cabinet portfolios, they remained as members of the ruling DRP. There were widespread rumors in Addu atoll that Dr. Hassan Saeed would join MDP.
Three ministers earlier confirmed that they would continue political reform in the Maldives and have now been working on to establish a law firm.
