Report: Soodh
Member of Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP Mohamed Zuhair’s call to take strong actions against senior members of the party who failed to turn-up for the protest on September 1 was the right of Zuhair to express his opinion and not a party view, says MDP spokesperson Maariya Ahmed Didi.
Maariya said that as a member of MDP, Zuhair has the right for his freedom of expression and welcomed his views. However, it was not a party decision. She said that all members of the party have equal rights to exercising the rights.
She said that it was the opinion of a member of the party which could be considered in the future as a party policy once it is endorsed at Council level. She also said that Zuhair could submit it for consideration.
Reports say that some senior members of the party were not happy with Zuhair’s comments. However, Maariya denied any such dissatisfaction and said that no rifts have caused within the party due to those comments.
MDP members organized the protest in Male’ on September 1, saying that the results of the vote taken on August 18 referendum was invalid.
