Home Ministry warns not to hold demonstrations against rules

Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a public notification warning not to hold demonstrations against the relevant regulations. The Ministry has said they have learnt from newspaper reports that opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP has planned to hold a demonstration in Male' on Saturday to express their condemnation about the result of the August 18 referendum which MDP has accused of fraudulent.

Home Ministry has informed the public there is a regulation which has to be followed when holding a demonstration. The Ministry has warned they will take appropriate action against those who participate in unauthorised demonstrations.

Earlier MDP national council has decided to hold series of demonstrations to condemn what they describe the highly rigged vote. Human Rights Commission of Maldives who observed the referendum in some islands have said the vote is generally valid but there are many irregularities observed. Commissioner of Elections K D Ahmed Maniku has announced the final official results of the referendum on Tuesday. Presidential system has received 95619 votes while parliamentary system received 58504 votes. 155890 persons of 199841 eligible voters voted. Voter turnout was 78.01 percent.
