Report: Soodh
People’s Special Majlis suspended its session yesterday following disagreements over procedural points.
Yesterday’s session was suspended following a disturbance when Meemu atoll MP Ahmed Shafeeq was not given a second chance to raise a procedural point. The agenda of the session involved debating on the complaints filed by 25 MPs against what they saw as inappropriate action taken by the 11-member committee which oversaw the referendum held last month to decide on a system of government for Maldives.
President’s MP Dr. Fathin Hameed began identifying names who she claimed had acted unlawfully with regard to measures taken in relation to the referendum; however other MPs prevented her to continue and started to raise procedural points.
Shafeeq then requested Speaker Qasim Ibrahim to give him a second chance to raise a procedural point. However, Qasim refused and Shafeeq began to behave in a way that disrupted the sitting.
Shafeeq was told to leave the sitting and when he refused, the sitting was adjourned for five minutes. After five minutes, as members started to gather for the sitting, three security guards prevented Shafeeq from entering.
The disruption forced Qasim to suspend the sitting altogether around 10:10am, just one hour and 10 minutes into the sitting.
Some MPs then vocally protested Qasim's and the security guards action. They staged their protest within the Majlis floor and inside the garden of parliament house.
