Foreign Minister welcomes Maldives Embassy to China

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Shahid yesterday hailed the newly accredited Embassy of Maldives to China as a concrete demonstration of the importance that the Maldives attaches to relations with China. He said the Embassy will serve as a portal through which the two countries will enhance bilateral cooperation in a number of fields.

The Foreign Minister said that r 2007 marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China. He further said that China has become one of the most important development and trading partners of the Maldives He added that Maldives is also an increasingly popular destination for Chinese Tourists.

Abdullah Shahid also said that Maldivians are increasingly looking towards the booming Chinese market for business and investment opportunities. He thanked the Chinese Government's decision to introduce a new visa scheme for Maldivian entrepreneurs which will enable them to get a one-year multiple entry visa. The new visa system would serve to further boost trade and investment opportunities between the two countries,
The Minister also noted that the further strengthening of bilateral relations with China by the opening of the embassy, will provide the two countries with a forum to discuss issues of common concern on important issues such as balancing economic growth and social development with the preservation of natural environment.

Maldives Embassy in China based in Beijing will be officially opened later this year during a ceremony to be attended by senior officials from both the Governments, Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
