The landslide victory for the presidential system in the 18 August referendum is a reflection of the tremendous support for Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party, DRP, Leader of the party President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said. Gayoom has said so addressing a packed party rally held on Wednesday. DRP leader thanked party members and everyone who voted for the presidential system. He said the success and accountability of the system can be seen in future when the system comes into force.
Gayoom said DRP is founded on good policies and values and that was why the larger majority of the people are supporting DRP and presidential system. Those who were supporting DRP and presidential system wanted people to have the opportunity and right of voting on the basis of freedom and equality. But those who are opposed to a presidential system obstructed such a vote. If they have respected the law and allowed the people to vote in a free manner, presidential system would have received even a much larger success, DRP leader said.
Leader Gayoom expressed concern about the intimidation and illegal activities targeted to supporters of presidential system during the process of the referendum which he said is still continuing in many parts of the country. He further said opposition sources are spreading false information to foreign sources.
Some senior members also addressed the meeting and rejoiced the grand success DRP has achieved in the referendum which they said is the systematic hard work they have done and the good policies the party have embraced.
Opposition MDP and other factions who supported a parliamentary system has accused of wide spread irregularities and rigging in the vote and has rejected the result. MDP has said they were filing legal action on the fraudulent vote.
