Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP has called on police to make a calm approach in maintaining peace and order within the society. In a statement released by the Party, it said that many activists of the party were beaten by police in a peaceful assembly on Saturday.
It further said that the protest organized was not for the purpose of any violent means and that it was a peaceful demonstration over the unlawful actions the party felt has happened in the referendum.
Several MDP activists were arrested and were released once protesters were dispersed. Earlier, Ministry of Home Affairs made announcements saying that the protest organized by MDP was illegal since the party has not obtained permission.
MDP said that they have the right to freedom of assembly and were exercising their constitutional rights.
Therefore, the party said that police should not use force and become violent in such occasions.
