Abdullah Shahid's cabinet post a slap in the face of those who supported DRP: Mariya

28 August 2007

MDP's Chief Spokesperson Mariya Ahmed Didi has said President Gayoom's appointment of MP for Vaavu Atoll Abdullah Shahid is a slap on the face of those who supported presidential system and DRP. Mariya said although MDP has rejected the result of the 18 August referendum, those who supported presidential system from the DRP has said cabinet will not consist of members of the Majlis.

However the fact remains that the DRP Leader has appointed an elected member of the Majlis a day after the result of the referendum was announced, Maria said. She further said it was like a slap on the face of the 93,581 people announced by the Commissioner of Elections as voters. She said this action is ample proof that the Leader of DRP and President of Maldives does not believe in what DRP has spoken, but instead he has believed what MDP had spoken.

MDP Spokesperson went on to say the President's action is also an indication of his conviction that the government can function with the support of the Majlis. “This is a clear indication that although President Gayoom himself had to promote a different system in his capacity as leader of the DRP, and however much he does not want to accept it, he supports a parliamentary system. Although the people representing DRP do not accept it, President Maumoon has accepted it. They campaigned vehemently that Majlis will not have ministers but against those principles, a Majlis member has been appointed to the cabinet so soon. This is proof that their words do not tally with their action. What MDP has advocated has now been proved by their action." Maria said.

President Gayoom has denied some allegations made by opposition sources that he was supporting a parliamentary system. During a party rally few days before the referendum, President Gayoom in his capacity as leader of DRP has clearly said that he has all along supported a presidential system.
