DRP - PRESS RELEASE

PRESS RELEASE

MEDIA RELEASE

DRP protests in the strongest terms the actions of the Human Rights Commissioner in personally associating himself with the MDP, the only political party supporting the Parliamentary System, while a National Referendum on the issue is underway.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party; DRP protests in the strongest terms the actions of the Human Rights Commissioner in closely associating with the MDP; the only party supporting a Parliamentary System, during a critical and sensitive period while a National Referendum on the System of Government is taking place.

This action of the Human Rights Commissioner, who has to ensure that he is above national politics, and be seen as such, is especially disturbing to the DRP. The fact that he has seen right to display, in such blatant terms, his association to the MDP, while a national referendum on the system of government is taking place, is evidence of his support to the MDP and the parliamentary system. That the Commissioner has displayed his obvious biasness after campaigning has officially ceased, is interpreted as an attempt to influence the result of the referendum.

DRP calls on the Human Rights Commissioner to stop, with immediate effect, his association with one political party and to take his legal responsibility to heart by representing all Maldivians, across the political spectrum, equally and fairly.
