24 August 2007
Report: Soodh

Chief government Mohamed Hussein Shareef has denied accusations that President Gayoom and the first lady engage in private enterprises.

Reports say that the accusations were made on the floor of the Majlis by Ali Waheed, MP for Raa Atoll, on Wednesday.

According to Waheed President Gayoom and his wife own a private business.

“President Gayoom is not a party to any private enterprise. He has never conducted his own business.” Shareef said.

According to Shareef Waheed is ‘taking advantage’ of the parliamentary privileges that protects MPs.

Shareef also said that Waheed made the accusations as the sessions of the Majlis are broadcast on state TV and Radio.

The present constitution which is set to be reformed completely by November 30 prohibits President Gayoom engage in private enterprise.
