Anni says no to Gayoom

Report: Soodh

Main opposition MDP’s Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has said no to President Gayoom following a request from the latter for a face-to-face meeting.

Anni said that the National Executive Committee of MDP when consulted on Sunday said that he could not sit with President Gayoom.

Anni told Miadhu that he did not know why President Gayoom wanted to see him. “I have consulted the executive committee on the request of Gayoom since I had told him that I would do that. The national executive committee is of the opinion that it was not the right time for the meeting. I cannot do things unilaterally.”

Anni also told Miadhu that at a time when people’s rights have been stolen, the first thing MDP’s members would do is to recover the rights.

According to Anni, Gayoom requested for a meeting with him over the phone.

“I have no personal matter to be discussed with Gayoom as there is no Anni now” explained Anni when asked whether Gayoom wanted to meet him or the chairperson of the opposition MDP.

When asked whether he has communicated the decision of the national executive committee, he said “links are suspended for the time being”.

After the provisional results of the referendum held on Saturday were out Gayoom urged the political parties in the country to forget the past and work together.

Gayoom or his spokesman has so far not confirmed Anni’s claims.
