Twenty five MPs accuse monitoring committee

28 August 2007

Twenty five MPs have accused the eleven-member referendum monitoring committee elected by the constitutional assembly of allegedly failing to discharge the committee’s responsibilities successfully.

The accusation was presented to the Speaker of the constitutional assembly by the MPs as a petition requesting to hold a sitting to discuss the issues surrounding the referendum held on August 18.

.

The MPs claim that so far there have not been solutions to the issues related to the plebiscite due to the failures of the committee in addressing the problems.

.

Among the twenty five MPs included Ahmed Hamza, MP for Faaf Atoll, Ali Waheed, MP for Raa Atoll, Abdullah Jabir, MP for Gaaf Alif Atoll and a member of the monitoring committee, Mariya Ahmed Didi, MP for Kaaf Atoll and Mohamed Shihab, MP for Male’.

.

When asked whether the Majlis, constitutional assembly, will accept the petition for discussion Jabir told Velidhoo Community that he was very positive that it would be allowed to enter Majlis floor.

The final results of the referendum have not been announced by the commissioner of elections yet. Meanwhile the monitoring committee’s members are thought to be struggling to find common grounds on addressing issues related to the vote.
