People's Majlis yesterday approved nominations of Dr. Mohamed Latheef who is Permanent Representative of Maldives to UN, and Dr. Abdul Muhsin Mohamed who is Deputy Minister of Education to be appointed as members of the Maldives Civil Service Commission and rejected nomination of Maimoona Aboobakuru. Dr. Latheef received 33 votes while Dr. Muhsin received 36 votes out of the 36 members present.
President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has submitted these three nominations to the Majlis on 25 July after the Majlis rejected nominations of Rashida Yoosuf, Abdul Hameed Mohamed and Mohamed Latheef on 11 July. Majlis has accepted nominations of Mohamed Zuhair who is Deputy Minister of Fisheries, agriculture and Marine Resources and Zakariya Hussain who is presently Deputy Director in the President's Office.
Majlis accepted nominations of Mohamed Zuhair, Zakariya Hussain, Dr. Latheef and Dr. Muhsin after scrutinising their education, experience, service records and on the basis of their integrity leadership and personality according to the criterion and conditions set by the 7 member committee elected by the Majlis.
During yesterday’s debate on the report of the committee, several members spoke about the urgency and importance of appointing an independent civil service commission as stipulated in the Maldives Civil Service Law. They also strongly emphasized on the integrity and independence of the members to be appointed to the commission.
