MALE, August 29, 2007 (Velidhoo News Service) – The United States has set up a Virtual Presence Post (VPP) to strengthen ties with the Maldives.

The website, http://maldives.usvpp.gov/ will be a new “diplomacy tool” that enables the US to have a presence in regions where there is no embassy or consulate physically located.

“The Maldives VPP will enable us to utilize new communication technologies along with our traditional outreach efforts to deepen our engagement with the Maldivian people and the region,” the website site, adding that, “the US has growing interest in the Maldives.”

The English language website has the latest information on US policies and US-Maldives relations, and includes useful information on how to apply for a US visa, search for an American business partner, or choose among a multitude of educational institutions in the US.

“The US role in advocating democratic reform is a focal point of the US-Maldivian relationship. We have urged the government of Maldives to push forward on democratization and maintain the timeline that was set out in the government’s March 2006 Reform Roadmap,” the website said in its introductory comments.

“The embassy will continue to engage with all political parties to encourage constructive dialogue as Maldives moves toward its inaugural multi-party election in October 2008. On the economic front Maldives offers significant untapped potential for US export and foreign investments,” the website said.
