Report: Soodh
The spokesman of ruling DRP says that new membership applications are flooding in.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday Ibrahim Shafiu said that the new applications began coming to his desk in growing numbers following the referendum held on Saturday.
According to Shafiu the applications are forwarded by members of the public who have voted for presidential system of government in Saturday’s poll.
“Some island communities are requesting for membership forms in numbers exceeding the populations of the communities. This indicates that the support-base of the party is expanding” Shafiu told reporters.
As soon as DRP declared victory on Saturday following the release of provisional results main opposition MDP issued a statement saying that the results were invalid.
Subsequently the eleven-member overseeing committee of the referendum decided to ask commissioner of elections do a total recount of the votes.
