47 media persons file petition

47 media persons have submitted a petition to the People's Majlis requesting to amend the bill on freedom of press in order to facilitate the country have a free and active press. These journalists who signed the petition requested to allow them participate in the committee discussion of the bill so that they can suggest some amendments which they feel are important to make the bill more responsive to a free and vibrant press in the .

These journalists said there are some provisions in the bill which will discourage and obstruct free press in the country. The media persons have noted 8 main issues in their petition and said there will be more they like to contribute to the bill in order to achieve the lofty objectives of the bill. It is reported journalists from Miadhu daily, Haveeru daily, Minivan daily and Fiyes were among those who sent this petition.

Bill on Freedom of Press was extensively debated in the Majlis and the Majlis finally voted on Tuesday to accept the bill. Several members participated in the debate, some said the bill is short of the expectations of a free press and need several amendments in order to have a free press. Others said freedom of press must have limits and boundaries and a legal framework is necessary to guarantee the rights responsibilities and privileges of both the press and the general public. Many expressed concern about the unlimited and unregulated freedom of media which they said have serious repucussions on the value system of society and rights of people.
