26 August 2007

A substance thought to be an illegal drug has been found in a school bag of a grade-eight student who attends the biggest girls’ school in the country, Aminiyaa School.

The case of the child who possessed the suspected substance was immediately reported to the child protection unit of the ministry of gender, says deputy principal of the school Wafaa Waheed.

According to Waheed the administration of the school was made aware of the possession on Tuesday by alarmed students.

Waheed says that the child in whose possession the substance was found has told other students about it which was packed in a small polythene bag.

Police when asked about the case acknowledged receipt of the information.

Waheed earlier told Velidhoo Community that his subjects have demonstrated such behaviors increasingly. She also told Velidhoo Community that such behaviors were closely monitored.

There are rumors that the volume of illegal drugs traded on the streets of the capital Male’ has declined over the past several weeks.

Some say that the decline followed stronger security checks at the gateways of the country.
