The commissioner of elections K.D. Ahmed Manik in a letter to the Speaker of the constitutional assembly Gasim Ibrahim has said that the provisional results of the referendum held on August 18 was the plebiscite’s final results.
In the letter which was leaked to the media, Manik said that the decision was reached in an unofficial meeting held at his office on August 21. “In an unofficial meeting attended by six members of the referendum overseeing committee the decision was made to declare the results as final.” Manik wrote in the letter to Ibrahim.
However Abdullah Jabir, a member of the committee, told Velidhoo Community that there has been no such decision in the meeting. Even in a subsequent meeting held on Thursday the members have not been able to decide on the issue, says Jabir.
The referendum was held on August 18, to determine public opinion on the future form of government for the country. The constitutional assembly proposed the eligible voters in the country to decide between a presidential and parliamentary system of government.
