Child protection helpline to be opened

17 August 2007

Ministry of Gender has decided to open a child protection helpline according to the ministry’s assistant director Aminath Inaas.

The free phone line to be launched in September could be used by children to report their experiences.

The ministry rejected reports that child abuse is on the rise. The ministry thinks that due to wider media coverage, people ‘are compelled’ to believe that child molestation is increasing at a faster speed.

Inaas believes that following the opening of the free phone line, there could be a boost to reported cases of child abuse.

The present punitive measures against child abusers have been very unpopular according to some reports.

Child abusers if found guilty are now banished to inhabited islands.
