17 August 2007

Dr Ahmed Shaheed, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has said that President Gayoom will help him root out corruption.

Dr Shaheed following rumors that he has quit Gayoom’s government in an SMS reply to Miadhu said “I have not relinquished office. I met the President and told him that I was not willing to be bullied by corrupt politicians.”

“And he (President Gayoom) pledged his full support to root out corruption.”

Shaheed did not confirm sending a letter of resignation to President Gayoom yesterday.

So far he has not asked for a separation, suggests his SMS message and that he has got what he had wanted from Gayoom by holding a meeting with the latter.

Rumors of Dr Shaheed’s alleged resignation circulated at rocket speed following the resignations of former attorney general and justice minister on August 5.

On the day speaking over the phone Dr Shaheed told Miadhu that he did not resign.

Subsequently a no-confidence motion against Dr Shaheed has been presented to the Majlis, general assembly. According to Dr Shaheed he is not worried about the upcoming parliamentary vote against him.

The parliamentary leader of ruling DRP Aneesa Ahmed has reportedly said that Dr Shaheed would be saved from the no-confidence vote.

Earlier Dr Shaheed was summoned to a sitting of the parliament following his comments that Majlis had failed.

The motion on grounds of parliamentary privileges was presented against Dr Shaheed on August 1. On the day several MPs condemned the foreign minister for his remarks.

Dr Shaheed in his defense-statement on the Majlis floor that day said that he did not mean to insult the MPs and the Majlis but he simply had exercised his right to free speech.

On August 1, the vote against Dr Shaheed could not prove him wrong.
