Minister of Tourism Dr. Shaugy has said that he forecasts a million tourist visits to the country per year by 2011.

Dr. Shaugy unveiled the figure at the ceremony held on Tuesday to launch third tourism master plan in Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaal Atoll.

According to Dr. Shaugy the reasons for the launching of the master plan was to achieve new economic heights and increase government income.

The ministry of tourism expects an increase of 11-precent per year in tourist arrivals according to the master plan.

There are different strategies cited in the plan to achieve the objectives, Dr. Shaugy told the audience in Hanimaadhoo.

The Maldives depends heavily on tourism income. However experts say that the country has three very strategic maritime regions to develop transshipment ports.
