MDP condemns insults directed at Indian MPs

16 August 2007

Main opposition MDP has condemned derogatory remarks made by Imad Solih (MP) on August 12 in an assembly held by ruling DRP.

MDP in a statement said “The Maldivian Democratic Party condemns the derogatory remarks directed at the Indian parliament and its members made at the meeting held on 12 August 2007 by the political party headed by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.”

“The remarks made by a non-elected member of parliament appointed by President Gayoom to the Maldivian Parliament and a council member of the President’s Political Party followed by a member of the Presidemt’s cabinet have caused immeasurable damage to the historic and brotherly relations which existed between the peoples of India and the Maldives” the statement said further.

MDP also called on the members of DRP to publicly apologize to the Indian Parliament, its members and to the people of India and to immediately resign from public offices they hold.

Reports say that Imad Solih, a presidential appointee to the parliament, told supporters of DRP on Sunday that 117 Indian MPs were accused of rape, murder or theft.

Also according to reports in the same meeting minister of information Mohamed Nasheed ridiculed the Indian parliament.
