Campaign reaches climax

17 August 2007

The presidential and parliamentary camps have ended their campaigns today at 1800 hours. Reports say that the camps conducted awareness programs, held rallies, marches and lorry-processions across the country until the 1800-hour deadline.

In the artificial beach area in capital Male’ until very close to the cutoff time a music show targeted for children continued as part of the campaign.

Miadhu’s correspondent in the second most populated region in the country, Addu Atoll, told that an unparalleled lorry-procession with regards to its size was held in the atoll today.

The lorry-procession was reportedly organized by the parliamentary camp. Miadhu’s correspondent says that more than 1000 residents took part in the procession.

Speaking to Miadhu Chairman of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) said “I am very happy with the performance of the parliamentary system’s promotional campaign.”

“I cannot think of a single reason why anyone should lose the opportunity to vote tomorrow”.

However, ruling DRP’s Chief Spokesman Ibrahim Shafiu said that he is not satisfied.
“Only intellectuals got the benefits from the debates. We have not reached the minds and hearts of the greater part of the general public.” Sahfiu told Miadhu.

All political parties but MDP back presidential system of government to be in the country.

However, there are suggestions that former Higher Education Minister’s People’s Association is in the same league with MDP.
