Limited employment opportunities: a major problem

12 August 2007

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that lack of employment opportunities for Maldivians, particularly youths, is a major issue that the country needs to address.
Gayoom made the comments at the inauguration of "Kissaru 2007". Speaking at the craftsmen's exhibition organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Gayoom said that since the country constantly produces trained youths, they should be hired.
He also said that his government gives priority to the needs of the youths as they remarkably outnumber all other demographic segments in the country.
According to Gayoom as each and every job is linked to a particular service sector, the work should be executed enthusiastically and sincerely.
Meanwhile, the country's tourism industry is heavily investing on new developments. Tourism is one of the most labor-intensive industries in Maldives and elsewhere.
The investments according to reports will create thousands of jobs in the industry.
