Entertainers back parliamentary system of government

14 August 2007

As heated debates, discussions and competitive campaigns continue to promote two systems of government, most of the entertainers in the country are reportedly found in the parliamentary camp.

Posters of prominent entertainers in the country are displayed with slogans of presidential and parliamentary systems of government, say reports.

According to Miadhu’s correspondent Ishmael Huzam more than 90 percent of entertainers support parliamentary system of government as the country prepares to vote in a referendum on 18th of this month to decide between two systems of government proposed by the Majlis for the future of the country.
“Two among us frequent the DRP office in capital Male’. These two have claimed in the office that most among us back presidential system of government. Their posters are also displayed all around Male’. The reality is that more than 90 percent of the film industry backs parliamentary system of government.” said Ali Rasheed who is a leading cinematographer in the country.

Rasheed showing a poster in his hand to Huzam said “This poster alone has pictures of 30 entertainers. We (the 30 entertainers) do not belong to political parties. We are independents. We are spending from our own pockets in an effort to clear the misunderstanding (that most of us back presidential form of government).”

Ali Seezan who won the most recent national award for the best actor’s role also told Huzam that he backs parliamentary system of government.

“Our beloved Zaeem (leader) has said that it was the individual’s right to vote according to the person’s choosing. He also has said that the individual has the right to decide the best system for herself. I think a lot on the two forms of government. Consequently I have decided to back parliamentary system of government” said Seezan.

When Huzam spoke to Nahula, a movie director, she told him that she supports presidential form of government.

When asked about the inclination of the majority of entertainers Nahula said “I have never claimed that the whole industry backs presidential form of government. What I know is that that my picture is printed on posters because I prefer presidential over parliamentary form of government.”

According to Nahula she is a member of ruling DRP.

The curtain on the stage where the debates, discussions and campaigns are taking place will fall within the next four days.

Presently all political parties but main opposition MDP backs parliamentary form of government to rule the country from this early part of the 21st century.
