Mavoata denies rumors of resignation

13 August 2007

Ibrahim Shareef (Mavoata) has denied rumors that he is intending to distance from ruling DRP and rejoining main opposition MDP.

Shareef who represents Addu Atoll in both houses of the parliament speaking to Miadhu said that he has not landed into any problems and has no intention of resigning from DRP. Shareef believes that MDP is not ‘accommodating’. He says that as long as the present constitution of MDP is effective, he would not give any thought on rejoining MDP.

According to Shareef the biggest party in the country is DRP and that the party is working on behalf of the people. He also said that he is pleased with DRP’s contributions to the reform process.

When asked about the rumors, MDP’s Chief Spokesperson Mariya Ahmed Didi said “MDP welcomes each and every citizen.” However she said that she would need to consult MDP’s leaders if she were to block entry to any citizen based on the person’s records.

According to DRP’s Chief Spokesperson Ibrahim Shafiu, Shareef is a very strong leader who works with DRP. Shafiu also said that he has no information on Shareef intending to resign from the party. He told Miadhu that he would do whatever it takes him to keep Shareef with DRP.

Shareef resigned from MDP several months back when he faced with allegations of sexual misconduct.
